Dr Dirk Siebels will be updating us on the wider Gulf of Guinea situation and how things are developing with regards to the security situation. Has the end of the rainy season meant a rise in piracy attacks or are we simply seeing a change to the nature of activity?

Dirk Siebels - Senior Analyst
Dirk Siebels is a senior analyst and responsible for analysis on countries in sub-Saharan Africa. He holds a PhD from the University of Greenwich in London. His research largely concentrates on maritime security issues in sub-Saharan Africa, including the role of ports and maritime trade, IUU fishing, offshore energy production and the evolution of private maritime security providers.
Dirk has contributed to a number of research projects, including the annual State of Piracy report published by Oceans Beyond Piracy (now renamed as Stable Seas). He is an academic advisor for the Turkish Navy’s Maritime Security Centre of Excellence in Istanbul and part of the expert network for CEMLAWS Africa, a thinktank based in Accra, Ghana.
Kais Makhlouf - Analyst
Kais Makhlouf works as an analyst with Risk Intelligence, where he focuses on the MENA region, as well as on the Eastern Mediterranean. Kais Makhlouf has previous work experience as an analyst in the private intelligence sector and as a military linguist in the Danish Armed Forces, and holds a BSc in International Business and Politics, and a master's degree in Middle East studies.
Ian Wilkinson - PortRisk Manager
Ian served 27 years in the Royal Navy as an electronic warfare specialist, working in a wide variety of ships and shore establishments. Ian was the UK’s in-theatre counter-piracy analyst at the UKMCC in Bahrain and attended regular industry forums, as well as representing the UK at the ONI Illicit Activities and Counter-Terrorism Conference in Washington DC. Since leaving the military Ian has worked in Nairobi for a private security company arranging armed and unarmed security and advice to shipping clients transiting the High Risk Area, before starting with Risk Intelligence in 2015.
Jim Pascoe - Chief Commercial Officer
Jim served as an officer in the Royal Marine Commandos, during which time he was heavily focused on counter terrorism both on land and at sea. As well as kinetic operations, he held several roles within the Information Exploitation group, fusing intelligence feeds to provide actionable situational awareness. Since leaving the military, Jim has worked in management consultancy, enabling large organisations to navigate change successfully, developing contingency plans and stress testing ideas.
Kristian Bischoff – Analyst
Kristian works as an analyst at Risk Intelligence, where he has a geographical focus on Northern- and Eastern Europe.
Kristian has previously worked as an assistant at Risk Intelligence during the launch of Port Risk, after which he joined the Danish Army for national service. Since then he has been a part of the Danish Atlantic Treaty Association, a Copenhagen based think-tank.
He holds an undergraduate degree in Emergency- and Risk Management, and a master’s degree in Security and Strategy from the University of Exeter.
Lars Albæk - Sales Manager and Special advisor
Lars Albæk is Special Advisor and Sales Manager for LandRisk and has been working on logistics anti-crime measures since 2002 in numerous roles including Country Manager at Eurowatch and Securi-Track networks. Besides working with Risk Intelligence Lars runs AL-Kon which has for the last 10 years advised companies and authorities on the use of Tracking devices and control centre specifications. AL-Kon has also developed customized cargo tracking solutions for larger companies around Europe with an exceptionally high recovery rate of stolen goods.
Steve Bacot – LandRisk Manager
Before joining Risk Intelligence, Steve served in the UK Parachute Regiment and has 15 years’ experience in international security. This has included support for governmental reconstruction programmes, commercial oil and gas projects and NGO humanitarian operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya.
With a strong operational background in hostile and post-conflict environments, Steve has focused on policy development, risk and incident management and compliance to industry and international standards.
Steve is an ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Physical Security Professional (PSP).
Steve regularly travels around Europe conducting onsite security surveys of truck parking areas.
Thomas Timlen - Analyst
Thomas Timlen, based in Singapore, is South East Asia Analyst. His background addressing maritime security threats began in the 1990s as an industry representative with BIMCO. Since then he has been involved with a variety of security related work including research conducted as a Visiting Research Fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. He holds a BSc in Business Administration and Management from Boston University.
Hans Tino Hansen - CEO
Hans Tino Hansen is founder and CEO of Risk Intelligence. He specialises in intelligence and maritime security risks for shipping, offshore, oil and gas companies. In addition, he has been advising a range of companies and governmental organisations at management level since 2001.
David Friesem - Director
David is a Director at Risk Intelligence and leads various advisory service projects as responsible for delivering both standardised products and and bespoke services to our clients. David served in the military forces and has over 25 years of experience in international security, combining expertise within maritime, aviation, homeland protection, and security technologies. He has proven experience managing complex, multidisciplinary security engagements and is globally recognised as an expert in maritime security and anti-piracy issues.
